The Velvet Hammer

Solo exhibition- MonOrchid Gallery Phoenix, AZ

An exploration of conformity and societal expectations, utilising several different bodies of work.

The main canvases, anchored in the study of colour use in marketing, employed vintage stock imagery transposed with sayings that might be part of an employee review, or broad assumptions about others.

The Conformation/Confirmation dress is assembled with painted transparencies featuring vintage advertisements about weight loss and how to be the ideal wife.

In creating Remember the Golden Rule, I decided to make a literal velvet hammer. It is moulded from my own personal hammer that has been called “a girly hammer” before. All the velvet included and the embroidered cloth, is vintage and gives a visual example of small but mighty; since a velvet hammer has been used as a reference to female executives who have a gentle way of persuasion.

The large abstract is a collection of online commentary screen captioned between 2016-2018 and printed in vinyl.

Finally, The Hollywood Ending Series is a collection of vintage Gingham paper dolls, reimagined with their own happy endings, some of which are more outlandish than others.
